BERLIOZ, Hector, 1803-1869

Symphonie fantastique, op. 14
Facsimile of the Autograph Score in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France
With a Commentary by Hugh Macdonald

Berlioz, Symphonie fantasique, op.14

Berlioz mounted 37 paste-overs in his conducting score ranging from thin strips to correct a single line, or whole page corrections—it's a sight to behold. The curators of the Bibliothèque Nationale have carefully removed the sealing wax securing each paste-over and have used celluloid tape hinges, making it possible to view the original and corrected version. The publisher has fastidiously reproduced them in this extraordinary facsimile edition. Click these thumbnails to view:

Documenta Musicologica, II/53. Kassel, 2017. 24 x 35 cm, 290, c.20 pp.

Deluxe color facsimile of the autograph score, one of the greatest treasures of the Bibliothèque Nationale. Berlioz revised the work for years before it finally reached its definitive form. He entered many of these changes in the autograph score, which was also used for performances, by pasting strips of paper over the bars or parts in question. This facsimile edition, in high-quality 4-color reproduction, presents the manuscript as it is today—with strips of paper that can be folded out, making both versions visible. Commentary in Eng-Ger-Fr. Hardbound with quarter leather spine and boards in colorful paper. $922
