The dedicatee of the work Hanuš Wihan suggested several changes to the score (some of them introduced in modern editions) however the composer steadfastly rejected all but minor changes as the autograph manuscript documents. Although the cellist Leo Stern played the premiere performance, Wihan went on to perform the work numerous times.
