On the suggestion of his friends the 19 year-old Schubert specially
prepared this manuscript
for Goethe, sending it to him in April 1816—with the intent of making
the settings known to
the poet and possibly enlisting his help in promoting them.
Unfortunately the action was met
by bitter disappointment, as the great poet returned Schubert’s
manuscript to
Vienna without comment.
