Full-color facsimile of the autograph—a treasure of the Pierpont Morgan Library—consisting of a mixture of fair copies and heavily emended first versions. The somber mood of the songs reflects a tragedy in a distant frozen landscape, with frozen tears, numbed feelings, a longing for death, each stage of the loss of love is sounded out by the somnambulistic text of Müller.
