Meisterwerke der Musik im Faksimile, 5. Laaber, 2 / 2015. 4°, xix, 54 pp. Fine color reproduction of the autograph score of the second part of Mus. ms. Bach P 271 which includes the 18 “Great” Leipzig organ chorales, plus “Vom Himmel Hoch” (S.769) and “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland” (S.660a). Evidence suggests that the works arose, at least in part, as a virtuoso program of organ works that Bach performed at a number of churches including the Katharinenkirche in Hamburg, the “great
organ in Cassel” and for a newly built Silbermann organ in the Dresden Frauenkirche. While the manuscript contains basically definitive versions of the chorales, as can be seen from the abundant corrections, a certain amount polishing of details took place in the preparation of this extraordinary collection. Introduction in Ger-Eng. Hardbound. $146
