considered the most lavishly illustrated Beatus, this 12th-century codex, written in Carolingian and pre-gothic script, has 123 very large miniatures (mainly whole pages) finished off with gold and silver. The Manchester Beatus was taken from Spain to France in 1869 and was later sold in an auction in Paris together with other books from the collection of the Marquis of Astorga and Count of Altamira. It has been in the possession of the John Rylands Library since 1901.
